A Simple Market Bag

Did you miss me on Wednesday?

Awe thanks ;)

so I was happy to move to Fridays!

I am super busy these days,
Sewing, Crafting, Painting, oh my!
I'm preparing for a big show next month,

Today I am going to share how to make a simple {Market Bag}
I've made a few of these for the show and I just LOVE them!
You do not have to be a professional sewer (I am not).
If you can stitch a straight stitch, you can make this bag! Promise :)
The really great thing about this bag is you can make it any size you want.
You just need TWO fabric pieces cut the same size for the outside.
and TWO muslin pieces also cut the same size for the inside liner.

For these two bags,
I used a vintage floral sheet for the outside.

I used new fabric for these.

Ok, let's get to the How to part.
Here are my four fabric pieces cut.

If you choose to embellish the bag,
you do that before you sew the panels together.

For the flower I used some lace I tore off a vintage pillow case.

To ruffle or gather the fabric.
Set you sewing machine on the highest tension and the stitch to the longest.
It will gather it as you sew.
Then, pull on the bottom string to gather it tighter.
Tie the end strings together so it doesn't unravel.
Pin it on your fabric and stitch it to the panel.
Sew on a button for the flower center.
Moving on to the straps.
Again, this is completely flexible. You can make your straps any length you like.
For this bag, I made mine 20" long x 4" wide {x2}
Loop 18" long x 4" wide {just the 1}
 Fold in half and iron.
Open up the fabric and use the center seam you just created as your middle.
then fold both sides in so they meet and iron.
Then fold one more time, down the center and iron. {not shown in this photo}
Now you should have a strip 1" wide.
This will become your strap.
Fold in one end of each of your two 20" straps.
Like the photo below shows and iron.
This will be the finished end you will tie to the loop.
 Ta da!
 So, to re-cap.
Two 20" straps.
One 18" strap {this will become the loop you will tie the straps to}
Stitch all the way around the straps.
For the outside and the liner.
First of all:
Place right sides of fabric together
and stitch on three sides leaving the top open.
Repeat this process for the liner.
Next: Fold the bottom of the bag so that the corner is pointed and stitch 1 1/2 in in.
This will create the flat bottom of the bag.
{you can skip this step if you want to}
 Final Step:
Turn your liner, right side out.
Leave the outside fabric, wrong side out.

Stuff the liner inside your outside fabric.

Tuck your two matching straps in between the liner and the outside.

Also tuck your loop strap inside.

Pin your bag so everything stays in place as you sew.

Stitch all the way around the bag {leaving a 3-4 in opening}

Then pull the inside out and stuff the liner back inside the bag.

The outside should be on the outside now
and the liner tucked inside the bag and the straps should be sicking out.
Iron the bag, so the top seam is really flat.
Stitch all the way around the top of  the bag this time.
This closes the hole and finishes off the top of the bag.
Tie or knot the straps around the loop.

And Done!
I made a few variations of this bag this week.
I added: Ruffles. Pockets. Lace.
 Have fun with it!
The teal bag with the ruffles...
my favorite!
The bag with the yellow flower...
my sister in laws favorite!
Which bag is your favorite?

See you next time!

Banana Split in a jar

Summer time for our family always has to include
some sort of ice cream yumminess!
And with the huge JAR craze that is hitting blogland,
I just knew I wanted to jump on that.
Something about a treat in a jar that just makes
it soooo much cuter!

(Anyone else on the jar band wagon???)

We had banana splits last week for a late night snack,
and for a little bit of fun,
I layered them in these cute little squatty jars.
They were the perfect "it is too hot to bake" treat.

Banana Splits in a Jar

6 sugar cones, crushed
2-3 tbsp. butter, melted

Stir together the crumbs and butter until mixed. Divide the mixture into 6 jars. Press down on the bottom and set aside.

8 large scoops vanilla ice cream, softened
2 bananas, mashed
hot fudge
strawberry topping
cool whip
sprinkles
cherries

Stir together the ice cream and bananas. Place the ice cream back in the freezer and let set up again slightly. (you just don't want it to be runny when you pour it onto the crust...I learned this the hard way if you notice by my picture;-) Layer the ice cream and one layer of each toppings not quite to the top of the jar. Top with cool whip, sprinkles and a cherry.

See you next Thursday with another yummy treat!

Idea Sharing Wednesday

Hello all you crafty blog friends out there! Welcome to Idea Sharing Wednesday. My name is Caitlyn and I'm so grateful to Jill for asking me to host Idea Sharing Wednesdays. I am from He Sowed She Sewed, a husband and wife blog focusing on gardening, sewing projects, and whatever other little adventures we discover. Jared is in charge of the gardening posts and I do the sewing projects for your entertainment.

We just moved to the far reaches of the Upper Midwest and we couldn’t be happier. We have two rambunctious daughters 3 and 1 ½ who don’t let us take a breath until they are either napping or in bed for the night. I'm so excited to learn from you all and to get busy on some of the marvelous ideas you share.

If this is your first time to a linky party, welcome! There are some tips to help you out, here.

Comments are strongly encouraged and appreciated.

Hope you are all having a fantastic week and are getting outside a bit to enjoy the summer weather.

Here are some great ideas from the past week:

A super cute idea over at I Heart Nap Time. This mom wanted an easy way to keep track of what grade her kids were in when she looks back at pictures of their first day of school.

I love this porch. I want the dangling nautical items and I adore the old window that has been nailed to the outside of the railing. Find this and other incredible tips over here.

Organic bananas dipped in fun!

I have an Oreo cookbook that someone had given me a long time ago. I don't ever buy Oreos because we try to avoid high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils but every once in while I will pick up a package of Newman-O's when I'm at the health food store as a special treat. I had a package in my pantry the other day so I decided to dust off the Oreo cookbook and look for recipes. This is the idea I found and I just adapted the recipe with healthier options. My husband came up with the clever name, bananas dipped in fun!
Ingredients:
Organic bananas
Organic peanut butter or any other nut butter
Newman-O's cream filled chocolate cookies
Sprinkles

Grind up cookies in food processor. Cut bananas in half. Insert popsicle stick. Spread peanut butter over banana. Sprinkle with cookie crumbs and sprinkles. Easy as that! You could also use cereal instead of cookies or try freezing them for a frozen snack. Get creative!

My kids LOVED these, of course it's hard not to love something with sprinkles :)

See you back in a couple of weeks,

The Lazy Sunday Dress

Happy Monday All!
I have to tell you I am so excited for today. I have been so looking forward to sharing this dress with you. I made this dress a few weeks ago. I really needed a new pretty Sunday dress, for church. I had no money to go shopping, but I did have a closet I could raid. I went into my closet and found this teal shirt and very long black skirt. I decided to put them on Dolores, as I loving call my dress form, and see what I could come up with. I decided to go with the ever popular high waisted look.

Photobucket

Once I had the skirt placed where I wanted,
I decided I needed to add a little bit of lace.

Photobucket

Photobucket

I pinned everything in place and got to sewing.

Photobucket

Once all three pieces were sewed together, I flipped up the skirt part and cut off the extra shirt material. Recognize this fabric at all? It is what I used to make the Braided Fabric Headbands I shared on my blog a month ago.

Photobucket

Once I had trimmed my excess material, my dress was finished.

Now I have a new Lacey Sunday dress. I have received so many compliments on this dress. It is seriously crazy how simple it was to make this.

Also funny side note story, at church last week Libby was wearing a dress I had re-purposed for her. It ended up she matched her teacher. Her teacher was wearing the same dress, pre re-purposing. Libby thought that was kind of fun and her teacher was amazed that I was able to cut it down to four year old size.
Very cool:>

Before I go, I wanted to let you all know I have a new giveaway going on over at my blog. It is from Buttons-n-Blossoms. Hop on over and check it out.

Emery

Anyway I hope you all have a fabulous week.
and I will be posting the winner of the vinyl Expressions Wall Art giveaway later on today:>
