What's in a Name?

Well as you've probably noticed, changes are coming here at Women Who Do It All.  Caitlyn will be hosting one last Idea Sharing Wednesday tomorrow so I hope you'll all stop by to say farewell and thank you to Caitlyn for being so sweet to put together the party each week.

Aesthetic changes to the blog are going to take place in the next couple days.  I've settled on a name and there's no going back now.  I hope I'm not the only one who has a really hard time deciding on names for blogs and businesses and such.  It's so hard!  Well here's what I settled on. . .  let me know what you think!

Well I hope some of you are as excited as I am about this.  Get ready to learn some awesome stuff!

Thanksgiving Day Announcement

Well first off, happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!

Okay so changes are coming, one really really big change.  I have felt honored to have such talented ladies contributing here at Women Who Do It All but I have been finding more and more that crafts are not my passion or my talent, photography is.

So the point?  Women Who Do It All is going to be undergoing a complete makeover, I mean new name, new topic, even a new url.  I understand if some of you won't be interested anymore because I realize this is a complete, turn everything upside down, kind of change.  BUT if you are interested in photography at all, many of my tips and tutorials will be of use to hobbyist photographers as well.  You will even learn some things for taking better photos for your blog!  So I hope you'll stick by me with this humongous change.

This should be a change for the better because a blog is only as good as the author is passionate about it.  The transition will take a week or two, but get ready for some awesome things to come!

Idea Sharing Wednesday

Welcome!

I have some great things to show you this week but first I have a special request. I am on an auction team that is helping out an organization called Young Lives
Here is a great video
Anyways, it is a wonderful organization and support for teen moms.

I am asking if any of you wonderful crafty people would be willing to donate any kind of item. You can donate a pair of earrings or any gift cards lying around the house. How about season tickets for sporting events? Maybe a timeshare that you won't get around to using this year? Do you work for a company that makes in-kind donations to charities? Whether you think your donation has a lot of value or just a little, we will take it all! Every gift will make a big difference in teen moms' lives.

Another opportunity for those with blogs that would want to get more publicity and traffic would be to buy an advertising slot. The auction is nationwide and thousands of people will see your advertisement or look at your donated craft item. The auction will run from March 1st through March 11th, 2012. All donations must be received by February 1st.

You can e-mail me at hesowedshesewed@gmail.com if you have any questions or are interested in donating. Thanks!

Okay on to the links:

An amazing play dough recipe, can't get enough of this stuff:

Thanks for coming, hope to hear from you!

Dieting on Thanksgiving

Ok, So the holidays are coming up, and if you're like me you're freaking out about wandering from your diet.  For me, the next few months are going to be riddled with holidays, anniversaries, birthday parties and cookie exchanges.  All of which are going to be filled with my so called 'trigger foods' that I somehow have no will power around.

There are basic nutrients that we need to stay healthy, protein, carbs and fats. However, during the next few months will also have a variety of sugary goodies available to us which not only includes cakes, cookies and candy, but alcohol as well.

When it's your turn at the buffet line, keep in mind the following healthier alternatives for your holiday consumption.  I've compiled a list of available foods that may be available to you during this season.  These are listed from best to worst.

Appetizers
Veggie and fruit trays
Nuts
Deviled eggs
Guac and salsa
If there are plenty of dips around, use veggies, crackers and breads.  Avoid chips and pretzels unless they're whole grain and baked

Proteins
Turkey is one of the best proteins.  It comes just below fish.  Unless you're in 'Everybody Love's Raymond",  you won't have fish as your main course.  Just don't load gravy on it. Remember the School House Rock song 'Don't Drown your Food"? Gravy, sauces and dressings are loaded with fatty cream bases and sugar.   Opt for natural turkey juices and vinegar based salad dressings.
Tofurkey.  A turkey made out of tofu.  Yes, it does exist.
Ham is loaded with salt and sugar and is also one of the fattiest foods.  It is yummy (as well as one of my favorites on the holiday season) but don't slather on the brown sugar glaze it comes with, opt for mustard or thousand island instead.

Carbs, and by this I mean complex carbs.
Sweet potatoes.  Don't goop on the marshmallow topping.  It probably has enough brown sugar an butter in it to satisfy your sweet tooth.  This goes for acorn and butternut squash dishes as well.
Whole grain or whole wheat breads and stuffing.  Now I know you're not going to pass up the stuffing, but if it's made with anything other than white flour ingredients, it's better for you.
Rice, especially brown rice is better too, but I never see these on holiday menus.

Fats
There are good and bad fats.  If you're cooking your holiday meal, use olive oil.
Nuts, especially almonds (about a tablespoon)
Guacamole (in moderation)
Avoid mayo
Avoid rich sauces and sugar

Sides
Opt for salads and green veggies.  Avoid casseroles as the sauce in them is very fatty.
Squash
Sweet potatoes
Cranberry sauce.  Home made is better than canned which has a high sugar content.
Potatoes, avoid potato casseroles and au gratins.  Again, don't slop on gravy.

Desserts
All desserts are going to contain sugar and bad fats.  Try only sticking to one dessert and avoid trays of cookies and candy dishes.
Jello molds
Grab a piece of pie.  Try not to top it, but if it's a must, Cool Whip is best.
Avoid chocolate and caramel sauces and sugary berries as toppers.

Drinks
ALWAYS DRINK IN MODERATION
Straight clear liquors are best.  If it's cocktail, try sprite or seltzer and natural juices
Even though wine has sugar, it's still better than beer.
Egg Nog

Hope this helps.  Remember to chew slowly and drink lots of water before and during your meal.  Have a wonderful holiday!

Thanks for reading!

Andes Mint Filled Cookies

Can you believe it is Thanksgiving in a week?
It is a good thing I don't have to make a turkey,
because I'm not ready for it!!!

I went from making tons of pumpkin treats right to Christmas treats...
and Thanksgiving isn't even here.
I am messed up I tell ya!!!

I blame it on all my Facebook friends who are posting
about listening to Christmas music
and putting up their decorations!
It is making me want lots and lots of peppermint:-)

So if you were hoping for a pumpkin treat today...
you are out of luck.
But I have you covered for all the cookie swaps
you get invited to:-)

Andes Mint Filled Cookies

1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 c. brown sugar
2 Tbsp. instant coffee
6 Tbsp. butter
1 Tbsp. water
1 c. chocolate chips
1 egg

In a small saucepan over low heat, combine the sugar, butter, coffee, and water until melted. Add the chocolate chips and stir until melted. Pour into a bowl and cool 10 minutes. Stir in egg, flour, and baking soda. Chill the dough in the refrigerator for an hour or until able to roll. Roll into 1 inch balls and place on an un-greased baking sheet. Bake 9 minutes. Cool. Fill with chocolate mint frosting.

Welcome!
I have got some splendid ideas for y'all.

An easy and delicious recipe, only 4 ingredients!
Make your own deodorant without any chemicals:
A lovely idea for your special furry friend:
It's that time of year again to take Christmas pictures and decide wha
t to wear in those pictures:

I love this blog, her family, her pictures and her words:
"There's something really beautiful about the process of writing (and therefore, blogging, for me) that I've come to value, love, and depend upon at this point in my life. Because sometimes writing is a recollection of where we've been, sometimes it's a reflection of where we are, and sometimes, it's a reminder of where we'd like to be. Usually, I think it's some sort of mish-mash of all three of those at the same time."
Thanks for coming! See you next week.

Hi! Paige here from The Crunchy Mamacita, I hope you all are having a great day so far :)

This is one of my favorite lunches to eat when I am at home. It's so easy to make and super yummy too!

1 cup chick peas/garbanzo beans, drained
1 1/2 tsp. tahini paste
2 Tbs. plain greek yogurt
2 tsp lemon juice
2 garlic cloves

{Blissful and Domestic} Fall Craft Plate

Photobucket
Danielle from Blissful & Domestic

Photobucket
Hello lovelies! Did everyone start a Fall countdown with their littles last week?
If not, their is still time. Let's make the holidays fun for our littles!
Today I am continuing with my challenge to keep with Fall decorating.
No red and green yet for this sista!
I have a simple, fun fall craft for you today.
So let's get our craft on!
I love re-purposing, so everything I used for this project, I already had on hand.

Photobucket

Here is what you will need:

1 glass plate
white acrylic paint
paint brush
scrap fabric and lace
glue gun

I started out with an old glass plate. It is from a set we don't use anymore.

Photobucket

I painted it white and let it dry over night.
(depending on the original pattern of the plate
you may need more than 1 coat of paint. I did 2coats)

Once my paint was dry I added some vinyl.
I used the word "Fall" printed out in brown vinyl.

Photobucket

I applied the vinyl

Photobucket

Photobucket

I am loving it already!

Now I knew I needed to add some extra cuteness.
Right now it is just a bit to blah.

Photobucket

I busted out my scraps of fabric and lace trim.

Photobucket

I then made three rosettes in different colors.

Photobucket

I added some lace.
Also place and check to see if you like it, before gluing.

Photobucket

Once I liked it I glued my lace in place.
I bunched it when glueing.
I then added my rosettes

Then I was done!
